AP Computer Science A Information

Homework will be given in class and posted on this website.  Make sure that if you are using CodeWarrior as your IDE you have the Java and GridWorld stationery installed. I will not be providing support for Codewarrior.  I will try to help you figure out your problems but I will be using JGrasp as my IDE.  We will have a different student “driver” every day in class.  This week, we will go over the summer packet, have some lecture and we will install the required files on the student laptops.  I will have the student driver install the required files on my school laptop under my guidance. As stated before, I have tried duplicating all of the problems the students had to no avail. Using my notes, I was able to successfully install all of the required files.

Summer Assignment Information

lab manuals can be found here

1. Gridworld Case Study/Reading

Download GridWorld installation files – http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/repository/ap06_compsci_GridWorld_Code.zip

Option 1: Download the following as separate documents:

GridWorld Case Study Part 1
GridWolrd Case Study Part 2
GridWorld Case Study Part 3
GridWorld Case Study Part 4
GridWorld Installation Guide
GridWorld Quick Reference

Option 2: Download the Student Manual (70 pages) which contains all of the above in one document.

2.  J2SE Download:  Download the J2SE SDK from Sun’s website. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Make sure you download the latest release. Remember to download SE and not EE. Make sure the files you download include the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). If you use Java 1.4 or earlier releases, you may have problems compiling GridWorld programs.  You will be tested on features for 1.6 (6) so it is recommended that you get this compiler.

Java has been purchased by Oracle. If you cannot connect using the link above, go to Oracle’s website and do a search from there.

4. IDE Download: Even though we will be compiling and running some programs from the command line interface, you will need an integrated development environment for your Java programs. You can use any of the following: NetBeansJGraspEclipse, or CodeWarrior (See Mrs. White or Mr. Eiholzer). I will be using JGrasp as my IDE.

Question 1: I went to the website to download the GridWorld this morning. I searched for it and everytime I clicked the link to actually get to the downloading page, it said I have to be logged in on AP Central. When I tried to sign up, it was for teachers only. I have a college board username, but it won’t let me get the program from AP Central as a student. Are there any other GridWorld websites?

Answer:  Try downloading from this linkhttp://www.allstudentscanlearn.org/ap_cs_summer_packet/ap07_cs_gridworldcode.zip

Question 2: I’ve been trying to download the gridworld case studies from your website and I also tried to got to them by using their individual URLs but for some reason, nothing comes up. What should I do?

Answer: Make sure you have the free Adobe Acrobat reader installed.  Download it from this link.http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Question 3: Java SDK and Java Runtime Environment, but every time i try to run it, an error message comes up saying it’s been corrupted.

Answer:  You will have to have the SDK installed before you can install an IDE.

Question 4: How do I install/unpack .jar files on my computer?

Answer: This url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/deployment/jar/basicsindex.html should help you. If not, email me but only after you have visited that website to no avail.

Question 5: There are no associations for the .jar file so I cannot extract the files.

Answer: Extract the files using the command line interface. See question 4.

If there are any problems, you can reach me via email at mrswhite@allstudentscanlearn.org. Please expect a response within 24 hours of receipt. This is a college level course and attempt should be made to solve the problems yourself before asking me a question. Please make sure you go through all of the links, documents and references regarding the assignment.

6. Your numbers are out of order.

Answer: That is not a question.

7. Enjoy your summer! – Mrs. White :-)
